OurCar’s purpose is to make Fredericton’s streets safer, quieter, cleaner and more friendly.
Carsharing achieves this by making it easier to live without a car. Without a vehicle in our driveway, the fresh air of a bike or walk to the store becomes a more obvious choice. It’s all about habits.
Green commuting has huge paybacks. The extra time you spent pedalling saves a trip to the gym. That gym time becomes time with your friends or family. The money you saved on yearly car maintenance, depreciation and gas easily buys you a vacation. Those are just your personal wins.
The biggest paybacks are shared. We all know less traffic means cleaner air and less time waiting to get onto the bridges. But it’s not only about that. Less traffic makes the whole city happier. Accommodating motor-vehicles takes up most of our urban landscape (more so as our city grows). In exchange for what? Space for trees, parks and housing. Areas to just be, see people’s faces, wander between local businesses, chat over coffee on a public bench in relative quiet.
Most of us sometimes need convenient access to a car. But making that access just a wee bit less convenient can make the whole cityscape more efficient. Carsharing shifts our transportation habits to create a friendlier, cleaner, safer city.
